RosWin meeting Jan 2012

January 18, 2012 - Leave a Response

Thanks to Ronan and Geraldine for their talks last night.

Geraldine’s talk was great and helping us to remember all these social media tools are “another channel to engage with prospective and current customers”.
Ronan’s talk was lovely. “Taking each day as a special day” is a very important. “Having passion for what we do” is key. If that is massage and neuromuscular therapy as in my case or what ever your business is.  Thanks again to the 2 speakers.

Have a look at some of the photos we took on the night on my www.facebook.com/AOBTherapies

Aromatherapy massage – what is it?

November 29, 2011 - 3 Responses

Using a blend of essential oils for a massage is called aromatherapy massage. Body or part body massage is the most effective way to use essential oils but note the essential oils need to be blended in carrier oil. I use customised blend of essential oils for each massage treatment in Roscommon and Athlone. For example I might blend Bergamot, Frankincense and Ylang Ylang in a carrier oil for some who feels like their immune system is struggling and they are in a heighten state of anxiety or suffering from panic attacks. The blend is absorbed into the persons system and continues to work after the massage treatment creating feelings of calm and well being.

The time taken for the essential oils to pass around the body is dictated by the individual metabolic rate. i.e. children will react quicker to oils than adults.

Ylang Ylang essential oil – it’s uses

November 23, 2011 - One Response

Please dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil before using it for massage.

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Ylang Ylang oil is distilled from the flowers of the plant.

During the process a number of different grades of oil are taken off. The first is ylang extra, and it is the most expensive and most desired by perfumers.

3 succesive distillations follow - grade I, II & III which are progressively less complex and lose more of the subtle top notes

The first oil that is drawn from the flowers is the best quality, though subsequent yields have similar therapeutic features, but the perfume is less refined.

Mind; Excellent for excitable conditions regulating the adrenaline flow and relaxing the nervous system, resulting in a feeling of joy. It could well ease feelings of anger, anxiety, shock, panic and fear.

Body;

It is very good at regulating the flow of adrenaline and thus slows its effects reducing stress, anger, frustration, panic and fear.

It is very good at balancing the hormones making it valuable for problems associated with the reproductive system. It is an antidepressant.

Its sedative properties are helpful with rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat and high blood pressure. Has a relaxing effect on the nervous system.

Ylang Ylang is heralded by many as an aphrodisiac.

Effect on the skin; Versatile oil, having a balancing action on sebum so making it effective on both oily and dry skins. Also a tonic and stimulating effect on the scalp promoting a more luxurious hair growth.

Precaution; Excessive use may lead to headaches and nausea.

One thing to remember: Ylang Ylang has a euphoric effect, promoting positive emotions in the user and calming and sedating in times of stress.

Frankincense essential oil – it’s uses

November 15, 2011 - One Response

Frankincense        (Boswellia carteria)

It has a spicy, balsamic aroma. Frankincense was known as one of the most precious substances to ancient man. I use Frankincense quite a lot in my practice as a massage therapist.

Mind; Frankincense is emotionally balancing, producing a sense of calm. Its comforting and somewhat refreshing action is helpful for anxious and obsessional states linked to the past.

Body; Slows down breathing.  It has a pronounced effect on the mucous membranes, helpful in clearing the lungs. Excellent effect on the respiration – eases shortness of breath and useful to asthma sufferers. Has a soothing action on head colds and bronchitis.

It soothes the stomach, easing digestion and belching.

Effect on the skin; Gives new life to ageing skin and reputedly smooths out wrinkles. It is a real tonic to the skin. It’s astringent properties also helps balance oily conditions. Found to be effective against wounds, sores, ulcers and inflammation.

One thing to remember: Frankincense is emotionally balancing and producing a sense of calm.

Bergamot essential oil

November 8, 2011 - One Response

This is the first review of the different essential oils that I use in my massage treatments. If you are going to use essential oils at home for massage please dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil.

Bergamot    (Citrus bergamia)

Bergamot essential oil is cold pressed from the fruit peel.

The bergamot fruit is not edible because the pulp is far too sour. As a result, the bergamot tree is primarily cultivated for its valuable essential oil.

Mind; It’s sedative yet uplifting character is excellent to relieve helplessness, grief and depression. It’s combined cooling and refreshing qualities seem to reduce anger and frustration.

Body; Antiseptic property makes it useful for urinary tract infections and inflammation like cystitis. Bergamot works on the digestive tract relieving flatulence, colic and painful digestion.

It strengthens the immune system.

Helpful with respiratory infections relieving symptoms of colds, flu and bronchitis as well as reducing inflammation and infection such as tonsillitis and sore throats.

Effect on the skin; It’s antiseptic and healing action seems to benefit skin conditions linked with stress. These may include eczema, psoriasis and acne.

Precaution: Bergamot may cause skin sensitivity to bright sunlight.  This is due to the chemical bergaptene which will help with tanning but not protect from burning. (This was an ingredient in sun tan lotions years ago.)

One thing to remember: Bergamot essential oil loves skin.
